Planning and Scheduling in Construction

Expert planning and scheduling support for Project Managers on capital projects. We develop logic-linked programmes, maintain reliable schedule forecasts and help teams identify emerging delays before they escalate.

What we offer

Planning and Scheduling Services

We support capital projects from early planning through delivery, developing and maintaining schedules that reflect the scope, sequence and resources required. Our planners review schedule quality, track progress and help project teams understand emerging delays and their potential impact.

Schedule development and baselining

Develop a logic-linked programme structured around your work breakdown structure, contract requirements and project needs. Where required, incorporate resources and costs, then establish the baseline through the agreed approval process.

Schedule updates and progress reporting

Update schedules with actual progress, forecast completion and identify changes to the critical path. Report performance through clear progress summaries, S-curves and resource histograms where required, so teams can understand schedule variance and its impact on delivery.

Schedule review and health checks

Assess schedule quality using recognised checks, including the DCMA 14-point assessment, and review the findings against the project’s scope, logic, durations, constraints and critical path. Identify weaknesses, explain their implications and recommend practical improvements before the schedule is submitted or relied upon.

Embedded planners and schedulers

Add experienced planners and schedulers to your team to support master schedules, resource levelling across projects and short-term look-ahead planning. We work with tools such as Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project, building on the capabilities of your existing team.

How we help

Logic-driven schedules, decisions you can defend

A schedule is only useful when it reflects how the work will be delivered. We review your project scope, sequencing, constraints and existing programme to establish the right level of detail and reporting. The result is a practical schedule that supports progress monitoring, forecasting and informed decisions.

From requirements to practical delivery.

We start with your project objectives, contract requirements and existing schedule. Together, we agree the scope, level of detail, update cycle and reporting requirements, so your schedule supports decisions from mobilisation through to handover.

FAQs

What clients ask us first.

What does a planning and scheduling consultant do?

A planning and scheduling consultant helps define how project work will be sequenced, timed and monitored. Typical responsibilities include developing baseline schedules, structuring the work breakdown, updating progress, analysing the critical path, forecasting completion and reporting schedule variances so the team can respond to emerging issues.
Planning defines the work required, the resources and approach needed, and how activities relate to one another. Scheduling turns that plan into a time-based model by assigning durations, dates and logical relationships. The schedule is then updated as work progresses to monitor performance and forecast completion.
A good baseline schedule reflects the agreed project scope, uses logical activity relationships, has justified durations and identifies the critical path. It should be detailed enough to manage the work and aligned with contract requirements. Once approved, changes should follow the agreed change-control process.
We use recognised schedule assessment methods, including the DCMA 14-point assessment, alongside relevant practices from the GAO Schedule Assessment Guide. These help identify issues such as missing logic, excessive lags, hard constraints, high float and long activity durations. We then interpret the findings in the context of the project, because a metric alone cannot establish whether a schedule is realistic or achievable.
We work with scheduling tools including Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project, and can use Power BI for reporting where appropriate. If you need software procurement or implementation support, our software team can discuss relevant Oracle Primavera solutions. We also offer Primavera P6 training for planning teams.
We support planning and scheduling for capital projects across sectors including construction, infrastructure, transport, utilities, energy and mining. Our previous work includes Primavera P6 programme consultancy, progress updates and support relating to extension of time claims on major building, mining and bridge projects.
Early engagement during planning and mobilisation helps establish the schedule structure, baseline and update processes before delivery progresses. Support can also be valuable when a schedule is slipping, updates are inconsistent, a client or contractor needs an independent schedule review, or the existing planning team needs additional capacity.

Engagement models

Fixed

A fixed price for the project or work, based on the work to be done. Suitable where all project inputs, specifications and requirements are defined.

Time & Material

Hourly rates based on the required work. Works well where not all inputs are readily available.

Dedicated Team

Retainer pricing based on the type of work and its duration. A dedicated team works as an extension of the client’s own team.
